I have read many, many, many Marilyn Monroe books so far – and the list and pile of books about Marilyn Monroe just keeps on growing, and long may it continue!! I've been asked numerous times what books about Marilyn Monroe would I consider to be worth looking out for, so I've decided to put together a small list of books that I have read, that I found really good, and hopefully you will too!! This list is not complete, I have a number of books that are waiting for me to rediscover them in my Marilyn book collection – so please keep checking back to this part of Marilyn Monroe Memories as I will be removing/adding new Marilyn books to look out for from time to time.. Also if you have a Marilyn Monroe book that you feel is good please let me know about it and I will try to feature it on here - thank you!! |

My Sister Marilyn (Berniece Baker Miracle & Mona Rae Miracle) – a fantastic book that allows people who love Marilyn Monroe to learn about the lady behind the image Some Like it Hot (Tony Curtis) - I was asked to write a review for this book - and here it is!! "I have a story to tell" states Tony Curtis as you start to read his book and what a story he tells!! I found the book very hard to put down, in fact I read the book in about 4 hours last night - always a good sign that I'm enjoying it. It starts off with a little background to Billy Wilder, Tony Curtis and how "Some Like it Hot" came to be, including how the actors were approached to be in the film, I like that, a good lead up to the main "event" so to speak. Tony Curtis also talks about meeting Marilyn Monroe before she "made it" as a top Hollywood star, he talks of a brief affair with her but not in too much detail. The book takes you on a journey through the filming of "Some Like it Hot" with ease. It is stated in the book that the press were forever taking "digs" at Marilyn, and were negative towards her before and during the filming. He mentions the "special training" that he and Jack Lemmon had to undertake to play the parts of "girls" in the film too, and mentions all about the lead up to filming starting. He does quote someone as saying "Marilyn was selfish" during filming but I feel she was focused on doing the job and doing the job right but that's just my opinion. This same person later went onto say "Marilyn hadn't meant to be selfish, it was only way she could work, picture a scene in her head". The now infamous statement from Tony Curtis "Kissing Marilyn was like kissing Hitler" is actually explained as to how that came about, and now after all these years I see that this line was taken out of context, but to find out how/why you'll have to read the book!! I could spend all day writing about all the different aspects of this book, some parts did "get my back up" as I am a staunch supporter of Marilyn Monroe's and I ALWAYS will be, but I know she was/is only human like us all and she had her bad days/good days, bad moods/good moods, however you get a feeling that Tony does have a soft spot for her, and she is not made out to be the "bad guy" at all, which was a relief as I know if she had been painted in a bad light I would not have been able to say to you all "go buy it" - I felt while reading the book that 99% of the time Marilyn and her memory are handled with respect and that is all, as a Marilyn fan I could wish for. The photographs included in the book are fantastic too and I would like to say thanks to Tony Curtis for wanting to share his memories of the filming of "Some Like it Hot" with all of us. So Marilyn fans if you see this book in your local bookstore or on-line I'd say buy it, I think and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. One last thing though - if Marilyn didn't show up for filming on time, fluffed her lines, got mad at times, to quote a line from "Some Like it Hot" - "Well, nobody's perfect"!! The Unabridged Marilyn (Randall Riese & Neal Hitchens)– A great reference book for all things Marilyn Monroe My Story (Marilyn Monroe with Ben Hecht)– a great book that is all the more fascinating as it is meant to have been co-written by Marilyn when she was alive The DD Group (David Marshall)– an amazing book that looks at Marilyn's last day(s) before she died and examines all the evidence, looks at the stories surrounding Marilyn's death and presents the facts found Marilyn's Addresses (Michelle Morgan) – a good research tool for anyone wanting to retrace “Our Marilyn's” steps |

The Last Sitting (Bert Stern) – a wonderful book full of images of “Our Marilyn” - these are among the last images of Marilyn before she sadly left this world Marilyn & Me (Susan Strasberg) – a book that allows us a glimpse into Marilyn's world away from the cameras, etc Cursum Perficio: Marilyn Monroe's Brentwood Hacienda (Gary Vitacco-Robles) – a unique book that allows the reader to go with Marilyn into her Brentwood home and look at furniture Marilyn owned, the layout of the house and quite abit more. It also looks at the story of Marilyn's final months |
