Marilyn Monroe was in England 14th July 1956 – 20th November 1956, and during this time The Prince and The Showgirl was filmed. As I'm an English Marilyn Monroe fan I thought I would list some of the places that Marilyn was able to visit in England in 1956.. Heathrow Airport (used to be London Airport), Hounslow, Middlesex – This is the airport that saw the arrival of Marilyn Monroe to England in July 1956. A reception with Lord Olivier and his wife, Vivien Leigh also took place at the airport, and once this was over, Marilyn was taken through customs, then onto the airport lounge where a press conference was held. Clips of this press conference feature in a number of Marilyn documentaries. Parkside House, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey – This is where Marilyn, along with Arthur Miller went to after leaving the airport. This was to be their home for the next four months during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl. Parkside House was set in ten acres of land which included maze pathways and rose gardens. Savoy Hotel, London – Another press conference took place here with Lord Olivier and Marilyn. Lowndes Place – After attending the Lyric Theatre to watch a show they visited Lord Olivier's house in Lowndes Place. |

Coventry Street, London – Marilyn found time to do some shopping in London while she was there, and was seen having lunch in a restaurant in the above mentioned street. Marks & Spencer, London – It is said that Marilyn visited this store while on a shopping trip in London. Harrods, Knightsbridge, London – It is said that Marilyn did some shopping at Harrods. Regent Street, London – Marilyn was seen shopping on this street, and even though she was mobbed by fans, she was able to buy some items. Sun Inn, Egham, Surrey – Marilyn was invited to relax here while staying at Parkside House. It is not known if Marilyn accepted the invitaion. Pinewood Studio, Pinewood Road, Iver, Bucks - This is where The Prince and the Showgirl was filmed. Windsor Great Park, Windsor, Berks – Marilyn and Arthur Miller enjoyed cycling around Windsor Great Park when there were breaks during filming of The Prince and the Showgirl. Comedy Theatre, Haymarket, London – The opening of A View From a Bridge by Arthur Miller on 12th October 1956 was attended by Marilyn and Arthur Miller. |

Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London – Marilyn, Arthur Miller and Laurence Olivier attended a performance of South Sea Bubble, which starred Vivien Leigh, on 17th July 1956. Word soon spread that Marilyn was in the theatre, police were called to keep the crowds under control that had gathered outside, and Marilyn finally left the theatre at about 10:50pm, and was driven quickly away by Laurence Olivier's car which was waiting. Empire Theatre, Leicester Square, London – Marilyn attended a Royal Command Performance at this theatre on 29th October 1956 and she met the Queen. It was a film that was shown in the theatre, not a variety show. Royal Court Theatre, London – November 1956 saw Marilyn and Arthur Miller attend a two hour discussion on British drama. Marilyn was not feeling well but sat through the whole of the discussion, it was only at the end did Marilyn confess to how tired and exhausted she felt.
