Did you know that.. ..Norma Jeane was learning to talk at 13 months old. ..the first song that Norma Jeane learned to sing was “Jesus Loves Me, Yes I Know” (Norma Jeane attended Sunday School while living with the Bolender family, and it is said that it was one of her favourite songs at that time). ..Walt Disney's animated character Tinker Bell was something that Marilyn was used as the model for. ..Marilyn's final Christmas was spent with Joe DiMaggio. Bought a tree, which they placed in Marilyn's Doheny apartment, it was decorated with Mexican tree ornaments, and they found these on Olvera Street, in downtown Los Angeles. Christmas Day was actually spent at the home of Dr Greenson. ..Marilyn Monroe, at the age of 21, after being dropped by 20th Century Fox, became a member of the Bliss-Hayden Miniature Theatre acting company. During the 8 month membership Marilyn appeared in at least 2 stage productions, Glamour Preferred and Stage Door. Glamour Preferred was staged 12th October 1947 - 2nd November 1947. The theatre was located in Beverly Hills, and is now known as The Beverly Hills Playhouse. |

..while Norma Jeane was at Emerson Junior High she appeared in two plays, one was called “Petronella” and the other was a musical staged on Valentines Day. The parts that Norma Jeane played were that of a King in one, and a Prince (who disguised himself as a beggar to win the heart of a girl he loved) in the other. In those days Norma Jeane looked very boyish, and there was a lack of boys who wanted to be in the plays, Norma Jeane got the parts!! ..Marilyn often visited a venue called The American Legion in Hollywood, and it has been said that Marilyn reserved a seat at the bar there!! The venue has a bar, theatre, etc and is still open today. ..in Autumn 1951 Marilyn attended acting classes with Michael Chekhov. ..in early 1953 Marilyn enrolled in mime classes at Lotte Goslar's Turnabout Theatre. Here she studied dance, mime, acting and movement. ..in 1953 Marilyn Monroe signed up with the well established Hollywood agency called Famous Artists Agency, after leaving the William Morris Agency. ..on 28th February 1956 Marilyn appeared in court for driving without a license in 1954. The outcome of this appearance was that she was fined $55. ..we all know that Marilyn's favourite perfume was Chanel No5 – however Marilyn did also like Arpege and Joy. ..at various times Marilyn would put either Vaseline, hormone cream or cold cream over her face. --Marilyn stated she was part Irish, Norwegian and Scottish. .. we all know that Marilyn could sing, but she not only sang in her films she sang at public appearances too. She sang at: Camp Pendleton: Somebody Loves You/Do It Again (1952), in The Jack Benny Show: Bye Bye Baby (1953), in Korea: Do It Again (Kiss Me Again), Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend/Somebody Loves Me/Bye Bye Baby (1953), at Romanoff's Party: Do It Again (1954), and at Madison Square Garden: Happy Birthday Mr President/Thanks, Mr President (Thanks for the Memories) (1962). ..that the song “Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy”, which Marilyn sang in the film Ladies of the Chorus, was lifted from this film and can be heard in the war film Okinawa. ..in 1959 Marilyn won the Crystal Star Award, which was deemed as being the highest honour in France, and she was voted the best foreign actress of that year!! |

..Marilyn signed a contract in October 1953 with RCA Records. Although Marilyn never recorded an album, she did make three singles which were: I'm Going to File My Claim/River of No Return: 9th April 1954, A Fine Romance/She Acts Like a Woman Should: 3rd September 1954 (never released), You'd be Surprised/Heat Wave/Lazy/After You Get What You Want You Don't Want It: 10th December 1954. ..Marilyn made her debut on radio in 1946, she was interviewed by KFI Radio Station, which was based in Los Angeles. ..Marilyn made her dramatic radio debut on NBC Radio's “Hollywood Star Playhouse” in August 1952. ..Marilyn was a guest on the Edgar Bergen-Charlie radio show in November 1952. ..on returning from England, after filming “The Prince and the Showgirl”, Marilyn did a radio broadcast from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York in December 1956. ..Marilyn was awarded her Hollywood Walk of Fame Star in 1960, this was given to Marilyn by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The address of Marilyn's star is 6774 Hollywood Boulevard. ..while in Australia in 1955, Marilyn was offered $200,000 to do a 25 day tour of the country. She would have headlined her own stage show, but Marilyn did NOT accept the offer. ..that Marilyn was in talks with NBC (after they contacted her) about starring in a show called “Rain”, it was a 90 minute programme which would have showcased her talents and it was for television. Marilyn signed a contract, it was rescheduled to be recorded in the Spring of 1961, with it being broadcast in the Autumn of that year but after NBC were unable to find a suitable director the show was shelved, also Marilyn pulled out, however Marilyn was in contact with NBC about the chance of appearing in another show for NBC but nothing was found. ..that when Marilyn was sacked by 20th Century Fox while in the middle of Something's Got to Give, Marilyn was thinking about the idea of a career in the theatre, when this was mentioned (to a selected few) Marilyn was swamped with scripts from comedy to drama, but this idea sadly ended abruptly for whatever reason. ..actress Shelley Winters shared a flat with Marilyn Monroe before Marilyn became famous. ..Marilyn's first Department Store Charge Card was with Magnin. ..Marilyn learnt how to lower her smile so she could hide an excessively high gum line (spent hours getting this just right). ..the dress that was worn by Marilyn when she sang “Happy Birthday Mr President” to President Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in 1962, became the most expensive dress in the world when it was sold at Christie's Auction House in 1999. It was sold for the huge sum of $1,150,000 (700,000 GBP). ..Marilyn now and again had “ice baths” and Marilyn was known to add Chanel No 5. ..Marilyn used a special type of lipstick, it was made up of a secret blend of three shades, and to get the moist look she would add a gloss after applying her lipstick (gloss was mixture of wax and Vaseline). ..Marilyn was registered as a Democrat in 1960. She was named as an alternate delegate to the national convention in that election year. She represented Roxbury, Connecticut community which is where she and Arthur Miller had a home. ..Marilyn told Bert Stern (photographer) in 1962 she used Nivea Skin Moisturizing Lotion, and it was something she always used. ..Marilyn was an avid Ella Fitzgerald fan (singer), and in the 1950's Ella was not allowed to play at a club in Hollywood called the Mocambo – just because of the colour of her skin. Marilyn contacted the manager of this club and told him if Ella was allowed to play there she would sit on the front row every night – and that is exactly what she did!! ..on 26th June 1953 Marilyn and Jane Russell were invited to have their prints placed in cement to go on display in the Grauman's courtyard, which is found at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre. It also was done to help promote the opening of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. It is reported that Marilyn had suggested that Jane Russell should bend over and put her bust in the cement, and Marilyn herself felt that her own buttocks should be put in the cement for all time – these ideas were rejected. So Marilyn asked for a diamond to dot her “i”, but she had to go with a rhinestone. This rhinestone was stolen, so in the end Marilyn settled for the normal hand and footprints in cement. ..that Marilyn was seen in a club called Florentine Gardens which is based in Los Angeles – this club is still open today!! ..in 1960 Marilyn was awarded her Walk of Fame star by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
